2016 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (GLC) Spy Shots

Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation GLK-Class is in the final phases of its development, and it looks like the popular small SUV will sport a very handsome new look. As the latest spy shots confirm, the new GLK will be slightly larger than the model it replaces. This is in order to make room for the smaller 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class .

The latest prototype clearly has a longer wheelbase than the current GLK, and its track is wider too. We can also see that the hood has been stretched and the front axle pushed forward to accommodate the longer wheelbase. This should translate to more interior space and improved dynamics. It also means the new GLK will better match rivals such as the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 in terms of comfort and space.

The car’s mechanical package will be shared with the redesigned 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. And with the new C-Class set to be manufactured at Mercedes’ plant in the U. S. there’s a good chance the new GLK will join it. The new GLK will also finally get a right-hand-drive configuration, enabling the vehicle to enter new markets such as the U. K. Japan and Australia.

A four-cylinder turbo should remain the base option, most likely the 2.0-liter unit found in the 2015 C300, which is good for 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The current GLK’s turbocharged 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel should carry over, while the range-topper should continue to be a V-6, most likely the turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 good for 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, and found in the 2015 C400. It’s not clear if Mercedes will finally decide to launch an AMG variant, but we certainly hopes it does.

What’s also not clear is whether the new GLK will still be called a GLK. There are rumors Mercedes is set to rename most of its SUVs. with the new GLK to feature the GLC name to reflect its positioning in the C-Class range of cars. The smaller GLA fits in with the A-Class family while the facelifted M-Class is said to be renamed a GLE to reflect its positioning in the E-Class family. Under this naming strategy, the GL would be renamed a GLS when it undergoes its mid-cycle update .

The new GLK, whatever it’s called, should debut early next year ahead of a sales launch next fall. It should list as a 2016 model.
